Studies on bergamot showed measurable reductions in cortisol, the stress hormone that makes complex thinking harder.

These are not marginal effects. The air in an environment is an active variable in human performance — not a background condition.

How every high-performance industry already uses this

The use of scent as a deliberate performance lever is not new. It is simply absent from one sector: the office.

Casinos figured it out decades ago. The major Las Vegas properties engineer their ventilation systems with specific scent profiles — not to make the space feel pleasant, but to lower anxiety, reduce time-awareness, and keep people present. A 1995 study by Dr Alan Hirsch found that gamblers spent 45 per cent more time at slot machines in scented areas than unscented ones. Not pleasant. Purposeful.

Aviation built it into the brand. Singapore Airlines developed a proprietary scent — Stefan Floridian Waters — used in cabin air, hot towels, and crew perfume. It's a registered part of the passenger experience, designed to trigger a calm, premium mental state the moment you board. Emirates and Qatar Airways have followed.

Elite sport uses it in the locker room. Performance facilities in American football and basketball have introduced peppermint and eucalyptus into warm-up environments, citing evidence that these notes increase oxygen uptake, reduce perceived exertion, and sharpen reaction time. A paper in the Journal of Sport and Exercise Psychology confirmed that peppermint enhanced running performance and grip strength in controlled conditions.

The military has researched it formally. The US Army Research Institute for Behavioural and Social Sciences investigated olfactory stimulants as a tool for sustaining alertness on extended missions — the same problem every knowledge worker faces during a long afternoon.

Retail has turned it into a competitive advantage. Nike uses a specific scent in its flagship stores to increase purchase intent. Research by Paco Underhill found that scented retail environments increased perceived product quality and the time customers spent in the store.

The history goes back further still. Ancient Egyptian temples used kyphi — a complex incense blend — to alter the mental state of priests during ritual. The Japanese practice of kōdō (焚道, the way of incense) was developed in the 9th century as a formal discipline of directed attention. Benedictine monasteries used specific incense formulas for different types of work: frankincense for contemplation, cedar for clarity, and herbs for grounding.

The pattern is consistent. Scent shifts mental state in a predictable direction. Every performance-led industry has accepted this and acted on it. The workspace hasn't.

The fragrance industry built its products for the home, evenings, relaxation, and guests. That's a legitimate market. It's the wrong one for a desk.

Pleasant and functional are not the same goal. A warm, soft scent makes a living room feel welcoming. In a workspace, it works against you — pushing the environment toward ease and comfort when what's needed is edge and directed attention.
